“William “Pickles” Onion, aged 33, came from a proud armed forces family. His father is a veteran, and William himself served with dedication in the Royal Signals, carrying forward the values of service, courage, and leadership that ran through his family. He passed away on 11th November 2023, a date that resonates not only with his family and friends but with every serving member of the military and every veteran around the world.

William’s life was full of passion and purpose. He loved hiking, challenging himself physically, supporting veterans, and giving back to his community. Whether through charity events, long-distance hikes, or simply offering guidance and encouragement to friends, William inspired everyone around him with his energy, generosity, and warmth. After his passing, William’s family and friends wanted to create something that would honour his life, celebrate his passions, and give back in the ways he would have wanted. That’s how Pickles Prizes was born – a prize site dedicated to raising funds for charities close to William’s heart. Pickles Prizes supports: • Rock2Recovery – helping armed forces personnel, veterans, their families, and emergency responders navigate life’s toughest challenges. • Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team – volunteers who risk their lives to keep hikers and adventurers safe. • Lough Neagh Rescue – and other charities that embody William’s courage, community spirit, and generosity. Every entry contributes directly to these incredible organisations, supporting the people who dedicate their lives to helping others. Since its creation, Pickles Prizes has raised tens of thousands of pounds, showing the power of community, remembrance, and action. This Remembrance Day, as we honour those who serve and have served, we can also celebrate William’s life, his service, and the passions that defined him. By taking part in Pickles Prizes, you help continue his legacy of generosity, adventure, and making a real difference in the lives of others. William’s life may have been cut tragically short, but through Pickles Prizes, his courage, kindness, and spirit continue to inspire, support, and transform lives every day.” View Lorna Smyths blog on  Facebook
